When the wave breaks there, don't be here: The story of Laurie Towner

When the wave breaks there, don't be here: The story of Laurie Towner

Affectionately known as the ‘big three’ the surf industry’s biggest players Rip Curl (Torquay, Vic), Billabong (Gold Coast, Qld) Quiksilver (Torquay, Vic) all have their roots in Australia. The companies grew from the back of cars and garages, servicing a small but growing surf population during the 1960s and early 1970s with clothes and surf hardware. By the late 1970s surf culture had become a global phenomenon and the fascination surrounding surf culture led to unprecedented growth. By the late 1990s the industry’s value was estimated at $10 billion. Fast forward to the late naughties, the industry bubble was ready to burst. The global financial crisis of 2008, an over-saturation of surf culture in the marketplace and the rise of online retailers all contributed to the downfall. For core surfers the industry had lost its way. It was brought to its knees and is yet to recover. As in most cases when industries fail, those who lose their jobs adapt their skill set and apply their tools to a new industry. But for the surfers whose job it was to surf to market the multi-billion dollar industry, the job openings were slim. There isn’t a big market for surfing critical, high-risk mountains of moving water outside the surf industry. One surfer who was riding the wave and was plunged into the depths as the industry fell apart is Laurie Towner, regarded by many as the greatest big wave surfer on the planet. Laurie, like many former pro surfers works a trade and surfs between shifts. Nazaré Dispatch . Marcelo Luna . Wave & Wipeout [Drone] [Big Wave] [Nazaré]

Action starts with Brazilian Professional Big Wave Surfer Marcelo Luna charging into a huge wave in Nazaré, Portugal, during the infamous session of November 8, 2017, a day otherwise known as “The Big Wednesday”. After successfully riding the huge wave, Marcelo is unable to grab the sled of the Jet Ski and misses his only chance of avoiding every surfer's worst nightmare, getting pounded by a direct hit in Nazaré. This is the same Big Wave session that awarded Rodrigo Koxa with the new Guiness World Record for Biggest Wave ever surfed, and the very same session where Andrew Cotton suffered a severe back injury in Praia do Norte. This sequence with Marcelo Luna took place during early morning, at the very beginning of this historic session. In this episode of “Nazaré Dispatch”, Marcelo Luna gives his first person testimony to the filmmakers, the local Drone Team “Máquina Voadora” about what happened and what is like to surf and get pounded in the world's most feared wave: Nazaré. His friend, the Italian Big Wave Surfer Alessandro Marcianó, which was Marcelo’s team mate during that session also describes the sequence, giving the audience a rare insight of what happens during a Big Wave Session in Nazaré when things go wrong. “I realised that I almost died”, Marcelo told the filmmakers in an interview, “one more wave, maybe, and I think I would be knocked out. It was hardcore... it was the worst situation I’ve ever experienced in Nazaré, I’m blessed to be alive” he added. Marcelo Luna is chasing Giant Waves in Nazaré since 2016, being one of the most active Big Wave Surfers operating in the area, with several WSL Big Wave Awards entries under his name, he is a regular presence when conditions go ballistic in Praia do Norte. Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed: 24 meters (78-foot). __________________________ Copyright © 2018, Máquina Voadora, all rights reserved Surfer: Marcelo Luna Jet Ski: Alessandro Marcianó Additional Footage: Nuno Dias, Pedro Miranda, Alessandro Marcianó Location: Praia do Norte, Nazaré - Portugal “Máquina Voadora - Produções” is a Drone Production team based in Portugal and specialised in Surf/Action Footage for the Advertising Industry, Sports Productions, News and Feature Documentaries. __________________________ The footage in this video is protected by copyright.
